Year 4/5 Eel Project

Year 4 and 5 Take Part in Inspirational Eel Conservation Project

Over the past term, pupils in Year 4 and Year 5 have participated in an exciting and meaningful environmental project led by Cambridgeshire ACRE in partnership with the Environment Agency. This unique initiative gave children the opportunity to care for young eels and deepen their understanding of the species’ life cycle, habitats, and the challenges they face in the wild.

To launch the project, Rachel from Cambridgeshire ACRE delivered an engaging assembly, introducing the children to the eels and outlining the responsibilities involved in caring for them. Her talk inspired curiosity and a real sense of ownership among the pupils.

Following the assembly, a special tank was set up in school and stocked with eight young eels. Throughout the term, children took turns monitoring the tank—checking water temperature, clarity, and counting the eels each day. They also took responsibility for feeding the eels and ensuring their environment remained healthy and safe. Alongside this hands-on care, pupils studied the life cycle and habitats of eels in class, enhancing their scientific knowledge and environmental awareness.

A highlight of the project was a visit to Godmanchester, where a group of children released the eels back into their natural habitat at the local locks. The moment was met with great excitement, with a countdown to the release marking the culmination of their hard work and care.

An Environment Agency representative attending the release was particularly impressed by the children’s knowledge and enthusiasm. The project has been a resounding success—offering a memorable learning experience and fostering a strong sense of environmental stewardship among our pupils.
